How to Calm and Prevent Skin Irritation from Face Masks

Whether it's while browsing the local shopping centre, traveling on public transport or working in a healthcare professional role, wearing face masks for an extended period of time can wreak havoc on the delicate skin on our faces. Skin complaints range from rashes and dry skin, to mask triggering acne (or 'maskne') and even pressure sores!

Thankfully there are some steps we can take to reduce the issues we face due to wearing face coverings.

Find a comfortable, snug fitting mask

Make sure your mask fits properly and that you’re using it correctly, so it gives the best possible protection. Cambridge Masks are fully adjustable thanks to toggles on both sides, and have a comfortable fit due to the head strap which takes pressure off of the ears, and optional nose foam to cushion the bridge of the nose.

Take a break

The moisture we breathe out will get trapped in most masks and can add to skin irritation. When safe to do so, regularly remove your mask so your skin has some time to recover. Alternatively, consider a mask with a valve such as the Cambridge Mask. The one way valve will help to reduce moisture build-up.

Keep your mask clean

Wash your mask frequently to remove excess dirt, dust and make-up from coming into contact with your already delicate facial skin. In addition, keep your face covering in a clean bag or container between uses to keep it hygienic. Don't forget, when putting your face mask on and off aim to handle it using the ear loops rather than touching the cover itself.

Take care of your skin

Make sure to regularly moisturise in order to maintain the skin barrier; apply moisturisers throughout the day when possible. A heavy duty night cream can help combat very dry, irritated skin

To keep skin clean double cleanse once or twice daily with a gentle products (don't forget your lips!) and carefully pat skin dry. Always follow-up with a moisturiser.

Avoid make-up under your mask when possible to prevent product build-up. If you can't skip out on make-up look out for products that are non-comedogenic as these will reduce clogged pores.
